Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of an open green laurel wreath behind a red cross-crosslet surmounted by a white heart voided all within a continuous maroon scroll inscribed TOTAL CARE WITH CONCERN in gold letters.

Symbolism
Maroon is the color used for Medical organizations.  The heart and wreath, adapted from the official seal of the County of Worcester, Massachusetts, also known as the Heart of the Commonwealth, allude to the area in which the Medical Activity is located.  The red Greek cross formed by the voided heart on the cross-crosslet is a symbol for aid and assistance and refers to the basic mission of the organization.  The four crossed arms of the cross allude to the four parts of manhead, chest, viscera and limb.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the U.S. Army Hospital, Fort Devens on 9 July 1970.  It was redesignated for the Cutler Army Hospital on 17 May 1972.  The insignia was redesignated for the U.S. Army Medical Department Activity, Fort Devens on 23 August 1973.
